The Claimant Count measures the number of people claiming benefit principally for the reason of being unemployed. Universal Credit was phased in across the country from May 2013 and introduced in Surrey in February 2016. This dataset includes all Universal Credit claimants who are required to seek work and be available for work, as well as all Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) claimants.
The Claimant Count includes people who claim unemployment-related benefits but who do not receive payment. For example, some claimants will have had their benefits stopped for a limited period of time by Jobcentre Plus. Some people claim JSA in order to receive National Insurance Credits.
Highlights (March 2024):
- There were approximately 16,445 unemployment claimants in Surrey in March 2024.
- Around 54% of claimants in Surrey were men.
- There were 9,815 claims by residents aged 25 to 49.
- The largest number of claimants was registered in Spelthorne with approximately 2,100 (12.8% of total claims across the county).
- The second largest number of claimants was recorded in Reigate and Banstead with 1,915 (11.8% of total claims across the county).
- Mole Valley had the lowest number of claimants from all Districts/Boroughs with 950 (5.8% of total).
