Until 1971, the Census of Population was based upon the numbers of persons who were present in the area of enumeration on the night of the Census. Since 1971, counts of “population present” have been published to enable comparison with earlier years. The data in this table which reflect the current Local Authority boundaries is derived from County Reports for Surrey and for Middlesex for censuses since 1891. However, changes to administrative boundaries in the past 100 years mean that comparisons cannot always be made with complete accuracy.
