NHS Surrey’s Public Health Directorate are undertaking a rolling programme of needs assessments that will be taking place across the five Surrey prisons to inform the commissioning process. This full needs assessment focuses on identifying the health needs of offenders in HMP Downview. The health needs assessment is also a key component of several of the Prison Health and Performance Quality Indicators that are being collected on an annual basis by the Department of Health and the Ministry of Justice. Health needs assessments allow commissioners to make plans for healthcare, based on a sound understanding of current service provision and patient needs. This HNA for Downview was carried out from mid - February to June 2010. The HNA for the Josephine Butler Unit (YOI on the grounds of Downview) is the subject of a separate report. It is recommended that health needs assessments are refreshed annually. The 2012 refresh is available on Surrey-i and should be read in conjunction with this.
