Deaths of people experiencing homelessness

The number of deaths of people experiencing homelessness in Surrey. These are official statistics in development.

This data derives from the Deaths of people experiencing homelessness in England and Wales publication.

National and regional values in the release include breakdowns by sex, five-year age group, and underlying cause of death.

For individual local authorities, only the number of identified deaths and the number of estimated deaths are provided.

Homelessness can be defined in several different ways. In this release, ONS have identified deaths from information recorded at death registration indicating that the person was sleeping rough or using emergency or temporary accommodation at or around the time of death. The definition does not align with official statistics on homelessness produced by other public bodies.

Identified deaths are records meeting the statistical definition of homelessness. Estimated deaths include an allowance for additional registrations not identified in the available evidence.

These are model-based estimates, and small differences in volumes should be treated with caution.

For further details on the release, including detailed methodology, please see link to the national publication given above.

The tables beneath reproduce the count of (1) identified deaths and (2) estimated deaths provided for the 11 District and Borough Councils of Surrey, and by summation the corresponding totals for the whole county and for each of the two forthcoming Unitary councils of West Surrey and East Surrey.

Numbers for the county are mercifully low, but tragically, not zero in any of the years included.

Table 1: Identified deaths of people experiencing homelessness in Surrey
