Population Estimates

This page includes the underlying data and a summary of the ONS population estimates by age and sex. The data tables of the mid-2024 estimates for Surrey and its Districts and Boroughs are included below. The 2023 estimates for other geographies have not yet been released, the page will continue to hold the mid-2022 estimates for these geographies until they can be updated.

Headline figures

• As of mid-2025, there are an estimated 1,255,255 residents in Surrey.

• The resident population of Surrey has been estimated to have grown by 0.6 per cent between mid-2024 and mid-2025 (7,463 residents).

• The majority of the Surrey annual population growth is from internal migration (with only +4,755 net internal migration) and international migration (with only +2,012 net international migration from outside of the UK). The majority of people moving into Surrey are from the rest of the UK (80,085 residents) compared to internationally (13,118 residents).

• Over the past 10 years, the resident population of Surrey has been estimated to have grown by 6.9 per cent in between mid-2015 and mid-2025 (representing 80,837 residents).

• One in every five residents are aged 65 and over in Surrey and this group has grown by 13.8 per cent between 2015 and 2025 (representing an additional 29,637 residents).

• On a whole, there are more children in Surrey than ten years ago (10,739 additional residents aged 17 and under, representing a growth of 4.2%).

• The mid-2025 population estimates for Surrey Districts and Boroughs are (in descending order):

  • Reigate and Banstead - 159,413,

  • Guildford - 152,148,

  • Elmbridge - 142,484,

  • Waverley - 137,218,

  • Woking - 106,197,

  • Spelthorne - 107,188,

  • Surrey Heath - 95,094,

  • Runnymede - 93,013,

  • Tandridge - 90,322,

  • Mole Valley - 88,808,

  • Epsom and Ewell - 83,370.

• Population estimates for the two new successor Unitary authorities of East Surrey and West Surrey have also been calculated, in advance of these councils existing. The population values have been added below. For mid-2025 the approximate total populations of these areas were:

  • East Surrey - 564,397.

  • West Surrey - 690,858.

• As of 2025, there are 755 residents per km squared in Surrey which is higher than the South East and England averages (508 and 451 respectively).
