Indices are a way to bring together a multitude of statistics to create a single (or collection of) value(s) rather than having to view each measure separately. The variables are often aggregated around meaningful themes and allow users to consider such themes in a more rounded way than singular measures. Indices are often used as a way to consider how areas compare, through ranking.
